Apple is having lawsuits filed against them after it was revealed they slow down older phones as they age.

Apple said it was to prolong the life of the devices and maximize the diminishing iPhone battery power.  The lawsuits were filed in California and Chicago by groups of iPhone users representing others who feel as though they have suffered ‘ecological damage’.

Apple hasn’t issued a statement yet on the lawsuits.

The latest iPhone, the X, removed its home button, in favour of facial recognition.

The court papers in California cite Stefan Boganovich and Dakota Speas as filing for loss of use, loss of value and purchase of batteries as reasons for compensation. They stated that iPhone users never contested the ‘interference’. Representing the plaintiffs would be James Vlahakis, of the Sulaiman Law Group. In a statement, he said:

‘Apple’s failure to inform consumers these updates would wreak havoc on the phone’s performance is being deemed purposeful, and if proven, constitutes the unlawful and decisive withholding of material information.’

Vlahakis said this was in ‘direct violation’ of a consumer fraud-related legislation in Illinois, Indiana and North Carolina where these complaints were based.

The problem arose when Apple admitted to slowing down older iPhone models, to combat the deterring battery it is using. The fact that they hid this fact for so long is a bit of an annoyance for many customers. Many suspected it was a ploy by the company to push people to buy the next iPhone. In the lead up to the next iPhone release, questions about the iPhone battery were on the rise.

The iPhone battery is notorious for running low rather quickly but is a problem that they seem to have fixed with the latest one.

The catch?

It costs £999 and nearly half as much to repair the thing should you drop it.

You’d think these people would just stop buying iPhones, right?
