While Jared Leto’s Joker may not have been to everyone’s taste, the upcoming Joker spin-off movie is on it’s way to being made. We now have some details on who the character will be and what kind of origin we’ll see for the clown prince of crime.

According to The Wrap, the movie will portray a failed comedian, who takes up a life of crime after his career in comedy takes a downward turn. Martin Scorsese will produce, rather coincidentally considering his involvement in the 198s movie The King of Comedy, which had similar themes.

The movie will be directed by Todd Phillips, who directed the Hangover movies.

While no official casting information has been released yet, Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly very close to signing on as the iconic DC villain. The film has no release date either, but will reportedly start shooting next year, according to The Wrap’s sources.

Script rewrites, however, could delay the movie’s progress.

In terms of Leto’s Joker, he will make a return in Suicide Squad 2 which will start production this year. Beyond this, there are rumours of a Joker/Harley Quinn movie, but like most DC stuff, it’s purely rumoured currently.

Leto was initially perplexed by the move for multiple Joker movies, going as far as The Hollywood Reporter to state he informed his agents he wasn’t happy about it.
