In an open letter released via ‘Lenny Letter’, Michelle Obama has highlighted the importance of the welfare of women worldwide.

“It’s very much about attitudes and beliefs: the belief that girls should be valued for their bodies,” she says.

The First Lady will be appearing at the SXSW festival in Texas, alongside Missy Elliot, to launch the next phase of her campaign, entitled #62millionGirls.

She says her figures show that 62 million girls worldwide are not in school.

“That’s why President Obama and I started Let Girls Learn, an initiative to help girls around the world go to school.

“Through Let Girls Learn, the US government is coming together with governments in countries like the UK, Japan, and South Korea and with businesses, non-profit organisations, and concerned individuals to invest in adolescent girls’ education across the globe,” she wrote.

She also talks about the new song she has released with artists Missy Elliot, Zendaya, Kelly Clarkson and Janelle Monae, which will be performed at the festival.

The First Lady described the song as “We Are the World meets Lady Marmalade”.

Unfortunately, Lady Obama won’t be contributing to the track, after admitting “I can’t even carry a tune.”
