A Change to Greggs?

If you live in the North East, chances are you probably love a good ol’ Greggs; we definitely do. So, it probably doesn’t surprise you to know that the high street food chain has reported a rise of 7% in total sales over the last year, reaching £894.2 million in 2016.

Having introduced a five-year plan to develop the company from a traditional bakery into a food-on-the-go brand, it seems that the changes have been successful thus far. Likewise, you may have noticed an increase in healthier options for the chain, with the introduction of a Balanced Choice range, now accounting for more than 10% of its sales, with revenues exceeding £100m in 2016.

Yet, according to the company, their increase in sales isn’t quite as impressive as it looks, with Chief Executive Roger Whiteside commenting:

“The UK consumer outlook is more challenging than we have seen in recent years, with industry-wide pressures emerging in commodities as well as labour costs.”

Could this mean that we will soon see a shake-up in our much-loved stores, with 2 out of its 12 bakeries having closed down already? We certainly hope not.

What do you think?
