Advice: What do I do now?

Making decisions can be difficult, but everyone has to do it – whether it’s small decisions on a daily basis or something huge that may change your life forever. It can be difficult to predict the consequences of your actions, but if you can make an informed decision then it will be a lot easier for you. Although B**P has previously covered advice on making decisions, this week we will focus on the significance of making a drastic decision, when you were previously sure of what you wanted but you no longer feel the same way.

If you’ve always had your heart set on doing something, it can be scary when you no longer feel the urge to achieve this. It does not mean that you are a failure, or that you are letting yourself, or anyone else down, it simply means that the circumstances have changed and you no longer feel the same about a certain situation. Yet, you may be struggling to choose between what you wanted to do previously, and what you have had thoughts about doing now, and this is when you must start to think carefully.

To begin, it may help to write a list on one particular decision that you’re struggling to make. It’s likely that you have a few options to decide from, so grab a piece of paper: place it landscape, split the page into as many columns as you need, one for each option, and then split this up again into two rows – so that you have a section for pros and cons of each of the options. Take some time to think about what you want, and then write your thoughts down in each of these boxes. You’ll soon begin to see which options have the most positives to them, and this should change your mind slightly.

If you’re still unsure, do some research online about the different choices. For instance, if you’re struggling to decide what your next step is in education then there is plenty of advice online, whether it be from school or college websites, the experiences of others or even some advice from B**P, which you can find here.

You might not want to discuss your concerns with others in case they are against you doing something in particular, or simply if it’s something personal to you, but sometimes it can help. Your friends and family will know you quite well, and so they could help to predict how you would cope in certain situations. Again, if it is a decision based on education then you could speak to teachers, or ex students who have plenty of experience in this area. Or, if it’s about a particular career path then similarly you could speak to others who are involved in the same careers or talk to a careers advisor who could specify the decision based on your skills and qualifications.

Whichever decision you decide to make, remember that it was you who made it – it was something that you wanted to do at the time, and no matter what happens it was right for you.
