Aleppo Evacuation Under Way

The Red Cross has said that an operation to evacuate the injured, rebels and their families from the Syrian city of Aleppo is now under way.

After a failed ceasefire on Wednesday, when the rebels and civilians were supposed to be evacuated, Syrian state TV said that “4,000 rebels and their families would be evacuated from eastern districts on Thursday”.

During the evacuation time, there has been a ceasefire in the city as government forces have taken most of the rebel-held areas of the city after four years of a brutal civil war.

According to Russia’s defence ministry, rebels, the injured and civilians will be taken out of Aleppo by bus to the province of Idlib, next to the city. Idlib is controlled by powerful rebels, includes the jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.

Aleppo and its people will need immediate assistance and support as the evacuation and horrors of war will have scarred them all. As humanitarian aid was blocked from getting into the city, thought to be the responsibility of Russia, its people will also need medical assistance in the coming months.
