The Angry Bird Movie has topped the box office for this week, perching above Civil War.

Prepare for bird puns.

The Angry Birds Film has already made an estimated $150m worldwide at the box office in its first weekend, knocking Marvel’s Civil War out of the nest.

Rovio Animation are behind the film, which cost around $73m, and are impressed with the response from younger viewers.

The PG rating is said to be the key to their success, giving them a wider audience to work with.

“PG is the hot new rating now. There used to be a stigma that younger teens wouldn’t be interested. The numbers prove that when you go after the broadest base possible, you can be highly successful,” said media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

This puts Angry Birds not just ahead of Civil War, but also ahead of the newest X-Men movie, which only reached $103m.

Civil War was praised unanimously by fans and critics for being the best Marvel film to date, and has thus far made well over $1bn at box office.

I must say I’m shocked by the number of viewers The Angry Birds Movie has raked in. Credit where credit is due. Bravo Rovio Animation.

You can really tell they didn’t wing it.
