At Least They Tried?

This isn’t what we wanted from Beauty and the Beast.
You’d think, looking at Beauty and the Beast, the obvious pairing you would make would be Cogsworth and Lumiere, right? I’m not going mad here, if anyone was to have a gay relationship it would be them.
You’d think that, right?
Sadly, however, this isn’t what we got.
The openly gay character will be LeFou, who has “confusing feelings” toward his friend Gaston.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that Disney is trying to be inclusive, however a lot of people think this isn’t the way to go about it.
Twitter explained it pretty well:
you had the chance to make cogsworth and lumiere a couple and you gave us “lefou is gay” instead wtf disney https://t.co/lv9QBgrgtk

Told you.
young gay kids deserve better representation than “lefou the fool and comedic relief is confused about his sexuality for gaston”

young gay kids deserve to see themselves in beautiful magical movies without the baggage of "he's insecure about himself"

Gaston mistreats Lefou constantly, some may even say it's abuse – what a horrible message to send to young kids that he's in LOVE with him

Philip Ellis puts it rather well too:
A subplot exploring the toxic masculine friendship of Gaston & LeFou would have been more interesting, but sure, we'll take a Token Gay.

Disney had a bit of a blunder on this one. I mean… they had 2013 to make Elsa gay for goodness sake.
Bottom line:
Gay characters = totally cool, awesome, progressive.
Making a character, who has a historically borderline abusive relationship with the only other masculine presence in the film, gay = a bit lopsided.
Oh well.
