The list of artists for the Sound Of 2016 has been announced, after being compiled by a mixed panel of 144 DJs, critics and writers. This year’s list features names like WSTRN, Jack Garrett and Section Boyz.

The accolade has previously been given to some of the biggest names in music in the last 12 years, and according to the rules, the act must not already be widely known to the UK populace, or have had their own single in the UK top 20 before the 30th of October.

Adele set the record for youngest act to ever be presented with the Sound Of accolade, while her album 19 topped charts with singles like ‘Hometown Glory’ and ‘Chasing Pavements’. Since then, she has gone on to become a multi-platinum artist.

In 2013, we saw another promising act anointed, who has since gone on to be the artist behind the latest Bond theme. Sam Smith had his first chart success in 2012 with Disclosure on ‘Latch’, which peaked at number 11 in the UK singles chart. Not even a year later, in February 2013, he released his first single from his debut album, In the Lonely Hour.

Other artists from previous years include grime artist Wretch 32, and electronic/pop star Ellie Goulding, as well as American rapper, 50 Cent, who topped the initial BBC Sound of list in 2003.

In the upcoming days, we will be taking a closer look at each of the artists on the 2016 list.
