I saw only a handful of movies this year and every single fibre of my being is grateful for the fact I saw Logan.

With the success of Deadpool in 2016, Fox proved something. There is an audience for grittier, darker, more bloody depictions of heroes. It proved that there doesn’t need to be an overarching villain or a lead into more movies. Some heroes just work in the bubble they are put out in. And that is how I would describe Logan.

Simply, it’s a story of a man way beyond his time. Logan is nearing 200 years old and his mutant powers are failing him. The adamantium skeleton he was given is poisoning his body. He drinks to keep the pain at bay and is trying to stay lowkey. Living on the border of Mexico, he’s lost all hope. Charles Xavier is now a classified WMD and all the other mutants are gone. In hiding or killed.

The once revered and powerful Wolverine is no more.

Until he is approached by a woman, with a child who possesses extraordinary gifts. Claws like Logan, but on her feet too. Advanced healing and unbridled fury. It’s at this point Logan is once again confronted with being a hero. Someone to believe in. He confronts the son of William Stryker, the man who poisoned him with his metal skeleton and a genetically engineered version of himself.

The movie is a bloody and dark journey into the end of this hero. From the moment you see him, you know Logan isn’t making it to the end of this movie but that doesn’t stop the ending from being a punch to the gut.

Casting is perfect. The action and pacing are superb and Hugh Jackman gives one of his best performances yet.

Do yourself a favour, watch this movie. Even if you hate superheroes, just, please. For your own sake, you deserve to be a part of this story.
