We’re now moving on from our previous book lists (including book suggestions for age 10-14, age 14-18, and lovers of book series) to look at what books you might like to try when you are moving away from teenage life and into adulthood.

Obviously, the question of ‘which are the best books?’ depends a lot on your personal taste, but we’ve tried to cover a broad range of novels here. Try one, or try all ten – these are our top picks of fiction for this category.

10) ‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt
9) ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F Scott Fitzgerald
8) ‘One Day’ by David Nicholls
7) ‘The Illustrated Man’ by Ray Bradbury
6) ‘The Lovely Bones’ by Alice Sebold
5) ‘The Casual Vacancy’ by J K Rowling
4) ‘Go Ask Alice’ – Anonymous
3) ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley
2) ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak
1) ‘1984’ by George Orwell
