Boy That’s Nasty

Quick warning, this article is a bit gross.

A solid mass of congealed fat, wet wipes, nappies oil and condoms has blocked an East London sewer. The blockage formed in the Victorian-era tunnel in Whitechapel. Thames Water has described the blockage as the biggest they have ever seen and could take three weeks to remove.

Let me be the first to say:

The proper word for these blockages would be fatbergs. These form when people flush things down the toilet that shouldn’t be flushed. The Thames Water’s company head of waste networks Matt Rimmer said:

“It’s a total monster and taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove as it’s set hard.”

He described it as trying to break up concrete.

“It’s frustrating as these situations are totally avoidable and caused by fat, oil and grease being washed down sinks and wipes flushed down the loo. The sewers are not an abyss for household rubbish and our message to everyone is clear – please bin it – don’t block it.”

So basically, stop flushing your none perishables down the sink or toilet.

Who flushes nappies?! Who does that?!

Congratulations, whoever contributed to this fatberg contributed to the nastiest article on this site, good job.
