Brits 2015: The Nominations

16 January 2015

By Lauren E. White

The annual and ever so prestigious Brit awards are returning this year with a few new tricks up its sleeve. After last year’s bombshell of the Brits’ long-term host, James Corden, announcing his decision to leave, there was a brand new job available that would be taken over by Geordie duo Ant and Dec.

As well as two new faces, the Brits have also allowed two awards to be voted for by fans: Best British Video and Best Breakthrough Act – the awards include the likes of Sam Smith, George Ezra, One Direction and Bruno Mars among the nominees. Voting for those two awards begins tonight online and the right to vote should not be underestimated – the power is in your hands!

Despite the excitement of voting yourself, the most prestigious categories include huge names of the artists who really did have a good year in 2014. Ella Henderson, former X Factor contestant, has picked up a whopping two nominations in her first year in the music business as she is nominated for British Female Solo Artist and British Single – both of which she has a strong chance of winning on the night.

Of course, it is not just Ella who is scoring big in the nominations this year as the ginger Jesus himself, Ed Sheeran, has scored a total of four as well as fellow music man George Ezra who is going head-to-head with the male Adele, Sam Smith, in each of his nominations. However, despite Sheeran and Ezra having four nominations to their name, it is indeed the soulful Sam Smith who wins the award for most nominations with an impressive five awards.

Disregarding the numbers of nominations and all the big names, comes the most prestigious award of the night – Mastercard British Album. Featuring the biggest-selling album of last year, Ed Sheeran’s X, a stunning and powerful debut from Sam Smith, In the Lonely Hour, an epic and up-beat record featuring some monster chart toppers from George Ezra’s Wanted on Voyage and two versatile albums from Alt-J, This is All Yours and Royal Blood’s self- titled album Royal Blood, the nominations for one of the most wanted awards in the business are a little bit naff to say the least. Nevertheless, it is certainly a career-booster for whoever wins the award.

You can see the UK’s biggest music award show live on ITV on February 25th where the likes of Taylor Swift, Paloma Faith and many more big names will be performing live.
