Popular underwear and apparel label Calvin Klein have recently come under heavy fire for their ‘overly provocative’ ‘upskirt’ shot in their 2016 global spring campaign.

When the latest spring underwear campaign launched, many viewers were shocked by the campaign images, with some claiming them to be of insanely sexual nature. However, one image (below) in particular has caused great controversy.

Of course the ad in question has driven a lot of attention and online traffic to the campaign; however, it is now receiving some unwanted attention from the National Centre of Sexual Exploitation who are demanding that the advertisement be removed.

The advertisement itself contains an image of model Klara Kristin stood above the camera in what is being deemed to be an ‘upskirt’ photograph by female photographer Harley Weir, with the caption “I flash in #myCalvins.” The National Centre of Sexual Exploitation, who are indeed less than impressed with the advertisement, have petitioned for its removal, claiming that it continues to normalise and glamorise the sexual harassment of women. Executive Director of the organisation, Dawn Hawkins, issued a statement explaining that Calvin Klein have used depictions of sexual harassment in campaigns previously and commented: “Up-skirting is a growing trend of sexual harassment where pictures are taken up a woman’s skirt without her knowledge, or without her consent. Not only is this activity a crime… by normalizing and glamorizing this sexual harassment, Calvin Klein is sending a message that the experiences of real-life victims don’t matter, and that it is okay for men to treat the woman standing next to them on the metro as available pornography whenever they so choose.”

The organisation have created a petition to have the advertisement removed due to its erotic nature and connotations of ‘upskirting’ and are also calling for the fashion label to not only remove the ad, but to suspend its Erotica advertisement campaign and issue an apology to victims of sexual harassment or assault everywhere.
