Those monsters. A change to the system will mean that American Airlines will no longer allow emotional support hedgehogs on flights. New rules stretch further than these small spiky creatures, however, with a whole array of woodland creatures being banned.

Ferrets, rodents, anything with tusks, horns or hooves have been denied access to flights. Or rather, their owner has. You wouldn’t find a goat looking to upgrade to business.

The policy comes after the rise in emotional support animals, which have made headlines before. Between 2017 and 2018, the airline reported a 40% increase for requests of animals travelling in the plane cabin. Other airlines also saw a sharp rise, like Delta and United.

The company said in a statement:

We support the rights of customers, from veterans to people with disabilities, with legitimate needs for a trained service or support animal.

Unfortunately, untrained animals can lead to safety issues for our team, our customers and working dogs onboard our aircraft.

The changes will come into effect on 1st June and will require at least 48 hours’ notice that the animal will be flying. The airline will then contact the passenger’s mental health professional for confirmation.

Why hedgehogs?

What’s wrong with a dog?
