Former Time Lord David Tennant has received an honorary doctorate degree in drama from the Royal Conservatoire Scotland (RCS). As you can imagine, fans of the former Doctor are in meltdown as their hero now officially holds the title.

Tennant studied at the RCS between 1988 and 1991 and said in an interview after receiving his honorary degree that it brought back “a lot of fond memories” of such an “important” time in his life.

Since his days at the RCS, the winner of the NTA’s Special Recognition Award has gone on to star in not only Doctor Who, but Broadchurch, Jessica Jones and many critically acclaimed stage productions like Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. Jeffrey Sharkey, Principal of the RCS, said Tennant had had a “profound impact… on individuals and audiences around the world”.

It is clearly a well-deserved recognition of the 45-year-old’s dedication to his profession, despite him dubbing it as “weird” and his advice to graduates being to “keep breathing”. The plethora of roles he has played and pulled off so effortlessly showcases an immense and rare talent: David Tennant can capture the essence of villains and heroes as well as psychopaths and grief-stricken husbands. He has always said he wanted to be an actor from the age of three after watching Doctor Who, so we can only imagine how surreal this achievement must be for him.
