Dua Lipa has been nominated for five Brit Awards, including best album and best video. Until now, no other female artist has received five nominations in one year.

She tweeted as the short lists were announced:

Ed Sheeran is also up for multiple awards, along with J Hus and Rag’n’Bone Man, all are up for three. They have all been nominated for best British album, along with Stormzy for Gang Signs and Prayer. Sam Smith, however, is not in any of the nominations. His album The Thrill of it All was the third-best seller of 2017, but has received no nominations.

The album was released in November, which may have been just too late to receive any nominations. However, it will be eligible for next year’s awards.

Sam Smith, along with Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran will perform at this year’s ceremony next month.

The fan-voted best video category is a three-way battle between the former members of One Direction.

Harry Styles is up for Sign of the Times, alongside former co-performers Zayn, for I Don’t Wanna Live Forever and Liam Payne’s Strip That Down.

“The fact that we’ve just come out of our band and everyone’s already up for these things, it’s fantastic.’ Payne told the BBC.

Going back to Dua Lipa, the queen that she is, she found massive success through her song New Rules. It’s an anthemic four-step plan for avoiding your ex. She rounded off 2017 as the UK’s most-streamed female on Spotify, with the New Rules music video having nearly 900 million views on YouTube.

The other best female nominees are Jessie Ware, Kate Tempest and former winners Laura Marling and Paloma Faith. This will be Faith’s fifth nomination.

Despite Dua Lipa’s overtaking in nominations, we could well see Ed Sheeran snatch some of those awards from under her, after the massive success of Divide. As well as being up for best album and best male, he will likely receive the Global Success award, which goes to the artist who has had the biggest impact overseas.

Comedian and actor Jack Whitehall will host the ceremony on the 22nd February.
