KFC and McDonald’s have decided to ban customers under the age of 18 in attempt to stop anti-social behaviour.

Last week, both fast food restaurants decided that children and teenagers will no longer be allowed to dine in some of the Stoke-on-Trent restaurants unless accompanied by an adult. If under 18s come in unsupervised, they will be forced to take their food elsewhere.

The new restrictions have been enforced due to a fight which involved 20 youths. The fight broke out at a McDonald’s near Meir Road, Stoke-on-Trent, a few weeks ago. A helicopter and armed police were called to the scene after witnesses reported the fight and claimed that shots were fired.

Eight people have been arrested due to the incident and two air weapons were seized.

In a statement, McDonald’s said: “We take a zero tolerance approach when a concern is raised relating to anti-social behaviour.

“The few restaurants in question have regrettably experienced recent issues with anti-social behaviour and, in consultation with the local police, temporary restrictions are in place for the time being.

“This is not a nationwide ban and additional measures apply to restaurants experiencing on-going problems.”

In another statement, KFC said: “It’s unfortunate that this is sometimes the only solution left open to us and we’re sorry that it will leave some customers disappointed. But we have found since this has been implemented there has been a noticeable improvement in the restaurant and we have received support from the local community and customers.”

Staffordshire police have been regularly patrolling the retail park where the altercation took place since the incident. It’s just a shame that the behaviour of some stop the rest of us getting our fast food fix.
