Five in a Row!

“They say 5-1, we say five in a row,” pretty much sums up the North-East derby.

Jermaine Defoe secured three points for Sunderland on Sunday with a 22-yard top corner volley. This was the 32 year old’s third goal for the club and it will certainly be one to remember. It was only Sunderland’s third victory at the Stadium of Light this season but was enough to move them clear of the relegation zone.

Defoe said, “It was unbelievable feeling when it went in. I was very emotional for some reason, as everyone wanted the three points so badly. The lads have been telling me what today would be like with the atmosphere and it was amazing!”

From the off the ‘black cats’ were always looking motivated which Newcastle lacked. United were second best in every department showing zero determination and passion which is what Derby Day is all about.

Newcastle and Mike Ashley only have themselves to blame they need to strengthen their squad and they never take the opportunity to do so, which isn’t an excuse because there are players with ability, but there is just no passion or pride.

If your coach can’t defend the performance produced by the team you know something is seriously wrong. John Carver, the temporary head coach said, “We only had one half-decent shot for their keeper to save and that’s a concern. I am absolutely embarrassed to be part of it, but I am part of it and I have to deal with it.”

He accepted Newcastle are now in a relegation fight. Carver then said, “We have only got 35 points. You need 40 points. We’ve got seven games left and thinking where the next points are coming from, but we have to turn this around somehow.”
