France Go All the Way

France secured their place in the final of Euro 2016 on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over Germany. After starting on the back foot, the home nation were able to fire ahead on the brink of half time after Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli shrewdly awarded a penalty from a handball by Bastian Schweinsteiger, and after an expert dispatch by Antoine Griezmann, Germany were forced to rethink their second half strategies.

The second half brought further elation for the French when Griezmann capitalised on an unconvincing clearance from the German keeper, Manuel Neuer, to net his second of the game, all but ending Germany’s hopes of European glory. In the final 20 minutes of the game, the hard-pressed French defence scrambled to keep the marauding Germans at bay, and France were the ones celebrating with the now-traditional Icelandic viking chant at the end of 90 minutes.

Having lifted the trophy as a player at Euro 2000, Sunday could mark the second time that manager Didier Deschamps takes home the illustrious silverware.

The final of Euro 2016, Portugal vs France, will be shown on BBC1 and ITV1 on Sunday 10th July at 8pm.
