After a decision was made to reduce the number of hospitals in England allowed to perform children’s heart surgery, there was major concern that Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital would be prevented from doing so.

However, it has now been confirmed that the Freeman will be allowed to continue performing children’s heart surgery, which is great news for the region.

NHS England has published its decision on the matter, which will involve cutting the 13 level one centres that currently perform surgery to 10, and nine level two specialist cardiac centres to four.

Level one units that are set to go are those at:

  • Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
  • Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Those level two units that will lose services – none of which perform surgery – are:

  • Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
  • University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust,
  • Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

It seems to have been believed that while units in England are safe, not all are providing excellent care.

So, NHS England hope that by making these changes the treatment will continue to improve, with more patients surviving and living for longer after receiving surgery.

These changes are expected to be put into place from April next year.
