Ghostbusters (2016) wasn’t exactly a massive hit with everyone. It underperformed at box office, and received some rather unfair critique, on the basis that the majority of the cast was female. Not because it just wasn’t a particularly good film.

Producer Ivan Reitman, who also directed the original movie, spoke recently about the movie’s performance.

He explained to io9 that they would have “loved a larger hit.”

“But considering the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue.

“I personally had other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a continuous conversation with Paul [Feig, director] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room to do the film he thought it should be.”

The movie made $229 million at box office worldwide, but was estimated that it needed to break above $300 million for Sony to breakeven.

Reitman explained that the likelihood of another movie is very low, however the franchise is far from scrapped, as they have now gone with animation as their main focus.

“We jumped into an animated film,” he said. “I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

Oh well.

There is also a VR game coming out from the franchise.

Yeah. We’re as surprised as you.
