Ah, Game of Thrones. A literary middle finger to the art of killing off characters, and a smash hit on HBO. For the past few months there have been some talks about a possible prequel series. HBO boss Casey Bloys has commented on the status of a prequel show.

Entertainment Weekly asked if there had been any fruitful talks with the GoT creator George R.R. Martin. But Bloys didn’t go into any specifics.

“I would say it’s still kind of preliminary, ongoing talks,” he said. “There are areas we are exploring but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.'”

There had also been circulating rumours that the final chapters of the series could be shown in theatres, to which he commented, “I want everything I can get for HBO, let me put it that way.” In September, show-runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said they wouldn’t continue their roles past the show’s end, but could definitely see the series continuing without them.

Game of Thrones has quite a large scope for spin-offs, given the stuff we see in season six, and the various comics that have been released as prequels too.

Benioff and Weiss said in July that the franchise was rich, and deep enough for countless opportunities for storytelling.

“One of the great things about what [Martin] did is he didn’t just build a story; he built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it,” the pair explained. “There are a lot of different ways you could go with it; we just really haven’t had time to really think through the details of it because we’re so focused on getting the show made.”

The next season of Game of Thrones will premiere later than usual. Instead of its usual April start date, it will begin sometime during summer in 2017.
