A flat in London has been advertised for £500 a month, with living accommodation that is more suited to a small child than a 23-year-old man.

Alex Lomax went to a flat share advertised online – described as ‘furnished’ – but was unpleasantly surprised as he was shown a mattress under the stairs, complete with boxes of Daz and a coat rack. Matt Hutchinson, director of the flat and houseshare website SpareRoom.co.uk, claimed that the advert was a sign of the growing pressure in London’s housing market.

“Average room rents in Clapham Junction are now £784 per month, so you can see why someone would be tempted by a £500 bargain”, he said, “but this ad is clearly not offering a room”.

From his tweet, it’s clear he was not impressed.

So for future reference, always be cautious when moving into a new place or looking for a potential flat share. Next time it might be someone’s balcony.

At least it’s more spacious than a cupboard.
