While the snow may have melted in the North East, weather warnings have been issued to the UK as the wintry weather still persists. All of Wales and England will be covered by a yellow warning from the Met Office which will be in place until Tuesday 9:00 GMT.

Hundreds of schools are closed in the south-west England and Wales because of heavy snow. Temperatures are expected to get a little higher this week, but it could turn colder once again by the weekend, forecasters have said.

Temperatures fell far below 0C last night, with lows of -5C in Scotland. Central and southern England also saw over 20cm of snow in places.

In Wales, a total of 207 schools have been closed, with some GCSE pupils being taught in a cinema instead. Devon County Council said that nearly all 307 schools were shut with others being partially closed. 97 schools in Cornwall and 163 schools in Somerset were closed.

Around 80 motorists sought refuge overnight at an emergency rest centre near the A30 in Devon. Among these were a couple on their wedding night.

Not exactly the best place to celebrate a new life together.

The A30 in Okehampton was blocked by heavy snow until it reopened the next morning.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell, stated:

“Generally, we are out of the woods but anyone hoping for a spring heatwave will have to wait.”

The UK should start thawing in the next week, but there is still the risk of frost and ice.

You wouldn’t think it was bloody Spring, would you?
