Sir Bobby Robson’s passion for football was an inspiration to millions. He started off his career as a low-key footballer and played for Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and played briefly for the Vancouver Royals. Bobby also played 20 times for England. After Bobby retired from playing football, he found success as a club manager and an international manager; he won league championships in the Netherlands and Portugal. Robson took England all the way to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, which remains the national team’s best run in the world cup since the 1966 England win. Three inspirational things:

  1. Robson was at the helm of Newcastle United between 1999 and 2004. He had a real passion for NUFC because his father used to take him to watch Newcastle play when he was younger. Not only did the Geordies think he was a saint but the rest of the footballing fans looked up to him.
  2. Bobby set up the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation in the Newcastle Freeman Hospital on March 25th 2008, after defeating bowel cancer in 1992, a malignant melanoma in 1995 and a brain tumour and lung cancer, both in 2006. His fifth and final diagnosis was in 2007 and he was told it was terminal.
  3. Sir Bobby Robson is inspirational because he cared so much and never gave up because he had so much love and passion for the game. Robson will always have a place in Newcastle supporters’ hearts and will always be admired and well-respected for all his achievements both as a player and a manager. Sir Bobby will permanently be in the place he loved most, which is St James’ Park, as his statue and memory live on.
