Within just 24 hours of the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Special going up on the BBC iPlayer, it was watched by over 1.27 million people, beating the record set by the opening of London’s Olympic Games last year.

The special, which was shown on 23rd November 2013, showcased John Hurt, David Tennant and Matt Smith. It also topped the tweeting chart as it was the most tweeted about drama generating 442,692 tweets!

The BBC obviously recognized that the special was going to be a massive hit as Doctor Who has been loved and watched by millions for the past 50 years! The show was broadcast around the world, screening in 834 cinemas in over 94 countries, breaking the record for the largest worldwide TV drama! If that can’t put a smile on their faces, what can?

With Matt Smith’s final hours of being the doctor looming in the distance, it will all be over on Christmas day at 7:30pm on BBC 1 as we wave goodbye to Matt and welcome Peter Capaldi on to our screens as the twelfth Time Lord. Let’s just hope Capaldi lives up to his expectations…
