Avatar still sits at the highest grossing movie of all time, with over $2 billion made worldwide when it was released. But how are the sequels coming along?

James Cameron gave Variety some details as to what’s going on with the IP. After a number of rumours, we finally have a word on what’s happening. Cameron promised four movies in the coming years, all set in the Avatar universe.

He explained that the 2018 release is still on, but that the idea wasn’t set in stone yet.

“The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern,” he continued. “I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfil on that promise.”

He also gave a small hint as to who the sequels would be about,”The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.”

Avatar was widely received as a visual spectacle, a feast for the eyes, and for a pre-production time of about 10 years, it’s a good thing it was. James Cameron also directed Aliens, Terminator, and Titanic, which holds the second spot for highest grossing film.

While no official release has been announced, the movie is expected in the summer of 2018.
