It has been reported that the multiplatinum artist has refused to do the halftime show for the Super Bowl out of respect for Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is an American football player, who refuses to stand for the US national anthem because America is still rife with racism and what he calls, the oppression of people of colour. He’s not wrong either.

Jay Z dedicated a song to the player at a show in New York earlier this month.

The Super Bowl has made a statement saying:

‘No decisions have been made on the performer(s) and we are not going to speculate on particular artists. Along with Pepsi, we know that we will put on a spectacular show. When it is time to announce her name, we will do it. Or his name. Or their names.’

Lady Gaga played the 2017 halftime show and sang the national anthem in 2016 for the event too. It was the second most-watched Super Bowl ever.

Next year’s event will take place on 4th February 2018, in Minneapolis at the US Bank Stadium.

Earlier in the month, it was rumoured that Britney Spears was ‘in talks’ to perform next year also, however, the rumours were swiftly shut down by the head of sports marketing for the Super Bowl Justin Toman, saying, ‘I can tell you it’s not Britney’.

A bunch of artists have been pegged for the 2018 Super Bowl, but none have been confirmed yet. These include Kanye West, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber and Rihanna.

Last year, Bruno Mars, Coldplay and Beyoncé all performed. Beyoncé garnered some attention from everyone’s favourite problematic news channel Fox News after her performance made some white dudes uncomfortable.

But who cares, because her performance b**ping slayed.

Skip to about 1:40 to witness the magic.
