41-year-old Labour MP Jo Cox has been pronounced dead after being shot and stabbed in her constituency.

Mrs Cox was left bleeding on the ground by the attacker and a 77-year-old man also suffered minor injuries. It has been confirmed that a 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall.

Police are also investigating reports that the attacker shouted “Britain first” as he launched the attack, which is believed to be a possible reference to the far-right political party of that same name.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn paid tribute to the MP for Batley and Spen, describing her as a “much loved colleague”. He added that Mrs Cox “died doing her public duty at the heart of our democracy, listening to and representing the people she was elected to serve.”

The Prime Minister David Cameron has also paid tribute to the MP, describing her death as a “tragedy”.

Both Vote Leave and Remain have suspended their campaigns in the lead up to the EU referendum out of respect.

Our thoughts are with her family and close friends.
