Labour passes vote of no confidence

The fallout of the European Union results continues as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s post is in grave danger.

Mid-morning on Thursday, two Labour MPs launched a motion to depose Mr Corbyn which has led to a vote of no confidence which was passed 172-40.

The vote follows a string of Shadow Cabinet members resigning in protest against the leader, posing a real problem for the Labour Party. It has left the Islington North MP replacing members who have cited a weakness in leadership for their reason to resign with some who have only been MPs since May 2015.

Loyalists to Mr Corbyn and the Party like Emily Thornberry and Diane Abbott have been given a promotion in the Shadow Cabinet to foreign secretary and health secretary. The MP for Blaydon, Dave Anderson, has also been given his first ministerial role as Shadow Minister for Northern Ireland.

With a large proportion of MPs resigning and many not supporting Mr Corbyn, it is difficult to see how his future lies within the heart of the Labour party.
