Snow continues to fall in many parts of the UK, causing power cuts, school closures and disruption to travel services.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning for parts of the country, with an amber ‘be prepared’ alert in place for Sunday. Hundreds of buildings have lost power across Scotland and the West Midlands. Police are warning of road collisions too.

This comes after Storm Caroline brought winds more than 90mph on Thursday. It disrupted a several rail and ferry services. Dozens of schools were closed in Scotland due to the weather also.

An estimated 250 homes are still without power across Scotland, according to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, with as many as 18,000 losing their supply overnight. Highway officials have warned of ‘hazardous’ driving conditions with police in Shropshire in the West Midlands advising drivers not to go onto the roads unless ‘absolutely necessary’.

The Met Office said 2-5cm of snow is likely to fall over parts of the UK in the coming days. A further 20cm could possibly fall in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and north Wales, along with the northwest Midlands.

‘Icy surfaces are also likely to be an additional hazard, especially overnight,’ it said.

I think this weather calls for some rather heavy mittens and at least three coats.

Stay safe people.
