Longest Reigning Monarch

9 September 2015

By Lauren E. White

Today Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning Monarch, surpassing Queen Victoria, her great-great-grandmother.

The Queen will have reigned for exactly 63 years and seven months, working out at an astonishing 23,226 days.

David Cameron will be leading a tribute in the Commons while the 89-year-old will be spending the day in Scotland on official duties.

There will be no official celebration for the Queen today as she has expressed she would like ‘no fuss’ out of respect for Queen Victoria. However, she is expected to say a few words while in Scotland today.

While Buckingham Palace keeps quiet, the Thames will be lined with historic vessels, leisure cruisers and passenger boats taking part in a procession between Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. It’s a good day to be in London.

At approximately 17:30 BST, HRH Elizabeth II – who became Queen at just 25-years-old after the death of her father – officially becomes the longest reigning monarch. Good on you, Liz.
