According to Variety, Amazon would be taking the role as the frontrunner for a rumoured Lord of the Rings TV series, with Deadline saying Netflix and HBO were also candidates.

There were also some financial details revealed too. The show could cost anywhere between $200-$250 million, for the rights on its own. With production costs thrown in too, it would likely cost as much as $150 million per season, according to Deadline. Amazon and Netflix are reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. TV and the J.R.R. Tolkien estate about the show, while HBO said ‘no’ a while back because of how high the production costs would be.

The most recent edition tot he IP was Shadow of War, which many felt was tarnished due to shoddy business practices and some awkward money grabbing.

Another thing slowing down progress may be that the rights don’t necessarily cover all characters in the franchise.

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, which began in 2001 with The Fellowship of the Ring and concluded in 2003 with Return of the King, made more than $2.9 billion worldwide, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Viggo Mortensen was among the titular roles in the movies, playing Aragorn, heir to the throne of man.

A shame The Hobbit movies didn’t live up to the hype.

What could a LOTR series cover? The gap between The Hobbit and the main series? What happened up north with Aragorn’s dad and the like. We’ll keep our ear to the ground.
