The past week was touted as a potential stumbling block for Newcastle United as they faced both 1st and 3rd placed teams in Brighton and Huddersfield. Victory in either of those games promised a clear road to promotion. Both games tested Newcastle’s grit and determination, yet United remained composed to go 5 points clear of Brighton and 11 points clear of Huddersfield – almost guaranteeing promotion. Despite conceding a big chunk of possession to Huddersfield (76% of it), The Magpies put in one of their gutsiest and most dedicated performances yet to grind down the Terriers’ attacks and bag a trio of goals at the other end.

Newcastle got off to a flyer after converting a penalty in the tenth minute and then fighting for a second on the half-hour mark. With two goals in the first half, Newcastle were able to focus on containing Huddersfield rather than exploiting them for the rest of the game. As Huddersfield fought for an equaliser in the final moments, the game was put beyond them after – having been brought up for a corner – the Huddersfield keeper found himself in no-man’s land as he was unable to catch a Newcastle clearance, which Dwight Gayle (a second half substitute; returning from injury) effortlessly nodded in.

Having made it through their toughest week of the season, Newcastle have offered us a glimpse of how their Championship story will end.
