Icy cold conditions are due to hit the northern reaches of the UK in the coming days after last weekends amber warnings over snow and ice.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice from 16:00GMT to Wednesday 11:00GMT, with the most dangerous areas being the north east and Scotland. Last weeks hundreds of homes went without power overnight, leaving dozens of people without heating or electricity.

Hundreds of schools have been closed for the day also, as we first the first snow we’ve had in years.

A drastic low of -13C was recorded on Monday night, which is the coldest night of the year so far in Shawbury, Shropshire.

The majority of departures from Heathrow airport in west London have been halted, with arrivals running as scheduled today.

The warnings cover essentially all the UK, in contrast to last weeks West Midlands, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Now most regions of the UK have been affected in some way by cold conditions. The ice warnings are higher for the north of England due to predicted rainfall. These areas are also likely to have a few centimetres of fresh snow too.

More than 350 schools were closed in the West Midlands, with some 200 in Shropshire and more than 300 schools in Wales shut for the second day in a row today. President f the AA urged drivers to slow down on the roads and leave more stopping space between vehicles amid icy conditions.

There are still homes in the West Midlands without power also. Some 220 houses are still without power after Sunday’s blackout, as reported this morning by the BBC.

Take note of the warnings people. Make long trips only if necessary and drive safely.
