Over 40 Labour MPs escorted their colleague Ruth Smeeth MP to an anti-Semitism hearing on Wednesday.

Ms Smeeth, who is of Jewish faith, was preparing to give evidence to a committee following an incident in 2016 where Labour Party member Marc Wadsworth verbally attacked her at the launch of a report into anti-Semitism.

It is the latest development in the Labour Party’s anti-Semitism row which has seen leader Jeremy Corbyn come under fire for failing to act swiftly and strongly enough to tackle the issue. Wadsworth, who said he was confident his name would be cleared, had his membership suspended nearly two years ago after the incident with Ms Smeeth.

Fellow Jewish and Labour MP Luciana Berger was one of the colleagues escorting Smeeth to the hearing. She said of Wednesday’s event: “Warm words are very nice, but they are not enough and that’s why you have a whole group of MPs here today in solidarity with our colleague Ruth Smeeth”.
