After a water pipe burst early Monday morning in Newburn, the bridge connecting the small village to the likes of Ryton and Blaydon will be closed for the foreseeable future, while inspections take place. Water shot metres into the sky and flooded 20 homes at the height of the burst.

Fire crews were called to the area just after 8:30 am on Monday and diversions were put in place. The water has been drained and an investigation has been launched as to what caused the burst in the first place.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said:

“Once the inspections are complete, we will have a better idea of how long it will take to repair the pipe and get the bridge reopen again. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank residents for their patience.”

For those who require Newburn bridge for the daily commute, you’re going to have to divert to Scotswood for the next however-long.

This isn’t the first time the area of Newburn has been hit with water problems. An entire flat block was shut down and rebuilt after serious rainfall way back in 2012. The A6085 from the Parish Church in the village, to the roundabout next to Walbottle Tyres, was also completely closed for weeks.
