Really. Really. Really funny.

NERC (the National Environment Research Council) opened up suggestions to name a £200m vessel to the public. Safe to say that wasn’t the smartest thing to do.

Boaty McBoatface currently leads the public vote, and honestly, I’m behind it 100%.

Vastly ahead of its competitors (things like Attenborough, Endeavour), Boaty is among the few eccentric names that were suggested from the public. From Usain Bolt to Ice Ice Baby, Boaty McBoatface is a real winner.

Boaty will be set to sail in 2019, and is to sail the waters of Antarctica and the Arctic carrying 90 scientists and support.

The NERC was looking for a name to reflect the ship’s prowess and its symbol of pioneering in the modern world. They advised that they were “looking for an inspirational name that exemplifies the work it will do.

“The ship could be named after a local historical figure, movement, or landmark – or a famous polar explorer or scientist.”

It was in fact the communications manager who tweeted the suggestion for Boaty McBoatface, and has since apologised.

He even looks like he has a little mouth.

He’s ready for an adventure.
