The suspected bomber of the New York City bus terminal has been charged with terror offences, police have said.

27-year-old Akayed Ullah was wounded in a failed attack on the city, using a low tech improvised explosive, in the Post Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan on Monday. Mr Ullah was reported as being in a serious condition in hospital after suffering severe burns when the device strapped to his body exploded.

Three other people suffered minor injuries in the blast, however no one was seriously harmed.

Following an interview with the bomber, NYPD learned the attack had been inspired by Christmas terror attacks in Europe. He then selected the Port Authority terminal as his target.

He said the attack had been motivated by the recent US air strikes in Syria on IS targets.

The suspect’s home has been searched, in the borough of Brooklyn. Police still believe he acted alone. His wife did not join him when he immigrated to the US. Her and other family members are now being questioned to try to understand how he was radicalized.

Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, John Miller, told American news broadcaster CBS that the suspect was ‘not particularly struggling financially’ and was not on police or FBI radar.
