People are Annoyed

In case you hadn’t realised, the people over at Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, have shut down the modding tool OpenIV, which was used to power the majority of mods on PC for Grand Theft Auto V. Safe to say, however, it hasn’t gone over very well. At all.

Although the company said that they were not targeting single player mods, the community has lashed out, taking to Steam, to express their rage. The game’s reviews in the past 30 days have been overwhelmed by negative reviews, with just 13% of them being positive. Just to put it in perspective, there are have been 42,000 reviews written in the past few days.

This has brought the overall rating to the game to mixed, with the top review having 22,000 people voting it as helpful, and it simply states:

“On behalf of the OpenIV team, **** you,”

The review has since been edited to add a link to a petition, which reads:

“All modding used by OpenIV is for single-player use only to make the game more enjoyable, the software OpenIV was never used to mod multiplayer or Grand Theft Auto Online so it does not harm anyone.”

Whether the petition will actually do anything remains to be seen. It does seem like a bit of an over-reaction from the player base, given that Take-Two has continually stated that they are only concerned with mods that affect GTA Online. Like any open source tools, they can be used to abuse other player characters, and potentially screw with someone’s experience.

It’s a sticky situation. While the modding of single-player is pretty well done, it’s a relatively small community. And if they were to weigh up the online aspect to the single-player… they’re going to choose the cash cow of the multiplayer.

We’ll see how this develops in the coming weeks.
