Plans for Gateshead-Based Arts Complex

A £200m complex dedicated to arts and leisure is planned to be built on the banks of the River Tyne in Gateshead. It will sit between the Baltic arts centre and the Sage music halls.
Gateshead Council is said to be investing £25m in the project, with the rest coming from the private sector. It will include a 12,500-seat concert hall, conference centre, and even a hotel. The land it will cover is said to be about 10 acres and could create over 500 jobs and boost the North-East economy by about £30m a year.
Building this complex would include closing the nearby Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle. SMG Europe executive vice president John Sharkey said:
“The Gateshead Quays development site is truly a unique location which will offer visitors a whole new experience.
“Our new entertainment, conferencing and exhibition facilities, standing shoulder to shoulder with Sage Gateshead and Baltic will, we firmly believe, further cement Gateshead Quays as a popular and stunning world-class cultural destination.”
The construction is set to finish in 2021.
It might help breathe some new life into the empty space that is currently sat between the Sage and the Baltic.
