Plus-Size Princess

Over 25,000 people have signed a petition for Disney to make its next princess character a plus-size.

Jewel Moore, a high school student in America, is responsible for starting the petition on change.org, stating “I’m a plus size young woman and I know many plus-size girls who need a positive plus-size character in the media”.

The likes of Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White along with others all have slim figures and not a curve in sight.

The Disney Princess franchise was created in the late 1990s based on characters from Disney animations such as The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Aladdin. Characters from more recent Disney movies such as Tangled and The Princess and the Frog have also joined the franchise.

Girls and young women are growing up feeling ‘ugly’ and ‘fat’ because they feel they are not up to media standards, such as Barbie dolls, magazines and TV shows, such as Britain’s Next Top Model,  portraying an image of the ‘perfect’ woman. In reality we are all different shapes and sizes and we are all beautiful.

Disney is yet to respond to the online petition.
