Sony has announced that their console – the PS4 for those living under a rock – has finally hit 50 million sales worldwide as of December 6th. That unit pertains to consoles sold to consumers and also includes PS4 Pro sales.

On Black Friday, Sony expressed that their brand had the best week in the company’s history. But no specifics were provided as to why. It might be due to the fact that on the whole, PS4s were cheaper, with some (rather locally) going for less than £200. But while it may be that Sony had a good week, the Xbox One, according to third-party analytics, outperformed the PS4 on Black Friday itself.

PS4 software sales, i.e. games and apps, are estimated at around 369.6 million across retail and via the PlayStation Store as of the beginning of this month.

Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Andrew House said in a statement, “We’re truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch.”

The PS4, much like the Xbox One, launched at the end of 2013 to a rather lacking list of titles. Now however, there is a wide variety of games and downloadable content for games on both platforms. The PS4s most popular releases stand with the likes of Until Dawn, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, and The Last of Us, which was released on the PS4 at the end of 2014, after its massive commercial success on the PS3.

Despite being abysmal for framerate and loading times on release, Bloodborne is one of the best titles for PS4.

The PS4 has some work to do to catch up with its predecessor the PS3, which has sold more than 80 million units world wide since 2007. However, given the rate at which they are selling, it seems very likely PS4 will reach that target by the end of its life cycle.
