Time Magazine has released its annual list of the greatest inventions to come out of 2016, and PlayStation’s recently released VR headset has made the roster, due to its affordability and power for price.

The entry reads:

“In order to access the most cutting-edge virtual reality, people typically have to shell out thousands of dollars – not just for a headset (like the $800 HTC Vive), but for a computer that’s powerful enough to support it.

Many have praised the PSVR for it's comfortable fit, and lightweight feel.

“Sony’s PlayStation VR, by contrast, is designed to work with a console that millions of people already own: the PlayStation 4.”

The PSVR is priced at $400 (£349.99), and requires a PS4, and the PlayStation Camera, but is still marginally cheaper than other VR alternatives, like the HTC Vive, and Oculus. Other headsets require a pretty beefy PC, as well as up to £500 up front for the Vive and more for the Oculus.

In October, Sony stated they were happy with the sales of PSVR, saying they were ‘on track’ and that it hopes to sell ‘hundreds of thousands of units’.

Honestly, though, at the moment, hold off on the experience. With the limited number of games available, it just isn’t worth the price tag. Perhaps next year we might see some cooler titles, and some games that aren’t simply demos. But if you want to get in on VR without spending nearly two grand, this is where it starts.
