Ready Player One Early Reviews

Early audiences have finally gotten their eyes on Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One after it premiered at the SXSW festival. The most recent trailer showed an explosion of nostalgia, with numerous IPs including Halo.
You can see that along with all the other movies coming out this month here.
Other noticeable characters include the Iron Giant, Tracer from Overwatch, Chun-Li from Street Fighter and even Doc’s car from Back to the Future.
The first reactions on social media have been rather promising, with the consensus being ‘fun’. Scott Weinberg, the film critic, said the movie was a ‘whole lot of fun’ and those who were expecting it to flop should ‘prepare to be disappointed’.
Ready Player One is a whole lot of fun. Those who are stuck in pre-release hate mode better prepare to be disappointed. #sxsw

Other tweets showed that it was a hit with people’s nostalgia and is apparently the most ‘astonishing thing he’s ever done’.
READY PLAYER ONE feels like Spielberg watched a ton of Luc Besson movies and decided to outdo them. In terms of pure spectacle, it’s the most astonishing thing he’s done. Never underestimate Steve. #SXSW

However, some were concerned with how ‘careless’ he was being with even his own IPs, including Jurassic Park.
I’m genuinely angry that Spielberg is so careless with his own legacy, slapping in references to Jurassic Park with all the care of a monkey slinging feces. #ReadyPlayerOne #sxsw

IGN gave it a 7.5, calling it ‘an action-packed, upbeat hero’s journey that keeps the film moving along at a thrilling pace’.
Our concern is that the movie will solely rely on that nostalgia and IP referencing to prop up an otherwise okay film. But we will have to see when 29th March rolls around.
