For all of you meat-lovers out there, you have got to get yourself down to Longhorns – the Barbecue Smokehouse. According to its website:

[All dishes are] prepared using only British livestock from Northumberland and beyond. Our meat is then rubbed with a blend of authentic spices before being smoked low & slow over hickory for up to 24 hours.

With the number and popularity of fast-food restaurants increasing at an incredible pace, it is often difficult to find somewhere that prepares each of its dishes fresh on the day, particularly with the uniqueness of having it slow cooked over 24 hours. What’s more, you can tell just how much effort has been put into each meal just by the taste.

Though the menu is limited to only 14 dishes, each one is filled with an array of different meats, spices and a multitude of extras to ensure that you have everything you could possibly ask for. A particular favourite for the slightly less-adventurous is:

Smokehouse Patty – 2 beef and hog smoked patties served in a brioche bun, with Monterey Jack cheese, ranch bacon, burger sauce and pickles. Comes with seasoned fries.

At only £9, this is an absolutely great deal. The burger is stacked to the brim, and you certainly won’t need to order any extra fries as they literally cover the plate. This is absolutely delicious, and definitely fills you up.

However, if you’re looking for something a bit different (and more expensive) then you may opt for:

The Board – A selection of all our meat including beef rib. Served with fries, slaw, rind, gherkins and a choice of pit beans or 3 bean chilli.

Now, that may sound like a lot but it is made to be shared – and it’s unlikely that you will manage it alone, but feel free to give it a go. Prepared on a large dish, you will be amazed at just how many different types of meat there are, and how delicious each and every one is.

So, what could possibly be a downside to Longhorns? Well, not much really. If you decide to visit the Jesmond restaurant, there is parking outside so you don’t have to worry about finding a space somewhere within all of those limited parking spots – believe me, it’s a nightmare elsewhere. However, if you decide to walk to the restaurant it is slightly more complicated – once you arrive at where you think the restaurant is, you’ll soon realise that’s not the case and you’ll have to follow some confusing signs until you reach the front doors. Once you’re in, you should be greeted fairly quickly but if you haven’t booked then you’re faced with another problem, as the staff must ask their supervisor if there’s any space. Despite this, they are often very accommodating and do their best to get you seated. If you know you’re planning on visiting then you may want to book to be sure. Apart from that, the only other downside to the restaurant is the waiting time. As it’s often rather busy, you may be sat around for a while waiting to be served, and again while you wait for your meal to be prepared.

Overall, despite there being a few complications, this does not detract from the high quality of the food, and the good prices that come alongside it. If you’re a meat-lover and you want to try something new, without that high price label that you often face in other restaurants of a similar style, then this is the place for you. You won’t regret it. Enjoy!
