Review: 2017 National Television Awards

This year’s National Television Awards saw a number of TV stars walk the red carpet. And, as ever, seeing the people we watch on TV dressed as all kinds of characters suddenly wearing ball gowns and tuxedos was a bit of a shock.

What wasn’t so much of a shock this year, though, was Ant and Dec’s sixteenth win of the Best TV Presenter award. The Geordie duo stole the gong from Mel and Sue who many thought had a real chance of taking the award from them this year due to them refusing to move to Channel 4 for The Great British Bake Off.

Ant and Dec also managed to beat Graham Norton in the category. However, he sort of out-did them this year by winning the surprise Special Recognition Award. Norton was uncharacteristically quite emotional in his acceptance speech, thanking those who had been with him “from the start”.

Taking away the Best Serial Drama award this year was Emmerdale, making a nice change from the two superpowers of soap Eastenders and Coronation Street.

Mary Berry took Best TV Judge while Strictly Come Dancing beat its Cowell-made rivals The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent in Best Talent Show. A full list of winners can be found here.

It has to be said that X Factor host Dermot O’Leary did a fantastic job at also hosting the NTAs this year, making the ceremony as engaging and lively as he usually does in his other presenting works. His singing at the beginning may need a bit of work, though…
