As of the next big Steam update, game developers will not be allowed to use things like concept art and screenshots from pre-rendered cut scenes in its image section. This is to give players more of an idea as to what they’re getting into, as many games (*coughs* No Man’s Sky *cough*) show inaccurate representations of the game in their images.

The new guidelines will come with the next store update, called “Discovery Update 2.0”, which is a “couple of weeks” from going live. Valve, using the word “game” in their announcement, clarified that these new guidelines will apply to pretty much everything that appears on Steam.

The notice states that:

“We ask that any images you upload to the ‘screenshot’ section of your store page should be screenshots that show your game,” Valve stated. “This means avoiding using concept art, pre-rendered cinematic stills, or images that contain awards, marketing copy, or written product descriptions.

Valve recently updated its in-house game Dota 2, by showing actual gameplay and characters.

“Please show customers what your game is actually like to play.”

They did say that developers could still include marketing and game information in the segments relevant to that information.

Valve, creator and owner of Steam, haven’t said whether bullshots, screenshots taken of the games’ pre-release state, would be able to be used.
