If you’ve ever tried to park on a narrow road, chances are you’ve faced a dilemma as to whether or not you should park somewhat on the pavement.

Well, now The Local Government Association (LGA) has stated that authorities should be able to prevent drivers from parking fully or partially on the pavement.

The LGA have suggested that councils could issue tickets to drivers who park on the kerb, a move that Londoners will be very familiar with.

But, is this something that could be implemented in the North East?

Well, The Chronicle have investigated for us.

A spokesman for Newcastle City Council said:

“We recognise that parking on pavements can cause problems, particularly for people with mobility problems and visual impairments and for parents with pushchairs.

“It can also result in damage to the pavement, which can be costly for local authorities.

“We would welcome additional powers, similar to those which exist in London, to address these issues, although we also recognise that one single approach may not be suitable for all situations.

“We would therefore need to consider carefully how any potential new powers would be used in order to address the problems which can arise while continuing to enable people – particularly in residential streets – to park appropriately and with consideration for others.”

Likewise, Neighbouring Gateshead said that they would “be interested to see how the LGA’s campaign progresses.”

What do you think? Would receiving a fine stop you from parking on the pavement?
